China ends One-Child Policy
On Thursday, it was announced that in China that married couples were now allowed to have two children instead of just one. It was decided in the 1970's by Deng Xiaoping because the population was increasing at too rapid of a rate. They were worried it would hinder economic growth. This was a bonus for the Communist Party. It was a way for them to completely control and shape the civilians lives. Also, it caused a steep shift in ratio of gender since males were preferred and forced many abortions. It was a bad situation for poor people especially when fines were expensive. However, news of this change in policy is not sugar-coated. The only reason it was passed is due to labor shortages and the inability to support the older people. The population is aging and there aren't enough young people to support it. It is unknown whether this will prompt a baby boom of any sort and the Chinese officials can only hope that it will promote the economic situation. Many Chinese choose to not have a second child even though some are eligible because it is very expensive and the society is extremely competitive. Mixed reactions were everywhere.
