Inmate Release
The War on Drugs was an issue, we can all agree on that. But recently there has been a change made in the way the US gov sentences drug criminals. The goal is to reconsider the laws that were passed during the time of the war. While this change was made a year ago the prisoners were released just this weekend. Many of the officials who work with people getting released are in support of this change. Mostly Hispanic and African Americans are being released, a total of 6,100. The guideline said to cut terms for those who commit drug trafficking crimes and apply charges retroactively for those already incarcerated. The inmates had to apply to be released. Only about 4,300 are being released from actual prison. Should we be concerned? I think it is only natural to be concerned about the release of prisoners into the public world, but looking at the data, these aren't all gang members and terrible people. I think that the confidence the officials have on this issue should be enough to console the bit of doubt we all have when we hear about the release of prisoners into our world.
